Benton Park, originally known as City Park, was founded on June 25th, 1866. Later renamed in honor of Thomas Hart Benton, the first Missouri senator, this southside neighborhood is home to a blossoming art and food scene. Developed from a botanical garden, there is still a strong influence of horticulture that defines the area. Another interesting tidbit about Benton Park is that a system of caves resides underneath the city. The constant 55-degree temperature of the underground caverns made it the perfect spot to store beer, and in 1840, John Adam Lemp built America’s first lager beer brewery in Benton Park. The demand for its product grew at a fierce rate, and eventually the brewery covered five city blocks. The Lemp Mansion, once the primary residence of the Lemp family, carries a mysterious and tragic past. Completely renovated in 1904, the impressive structure is now home to a museum and reception space that offers dinner theater events and haunted house tours.
